In recent years, the United States has been home to some of the most successful Venture Capitalists in the world. These venture capitalists have transformed our economy and helped make a lot of people rich.
In this blog post, we’re going to look at how these entrepreneurs started and their impact on society today.
– “The people who invest money in companies to help them grow are called venture capitalists.”
– Venture capitalists fund new ventures, including those that could lead to the next Facebook.
– They take an equity stake and a board seat for their investment, which they can earn back multiple times over if it goes well.
A Brief History of Venture Capitalists:
In the early days, venture capitalists were often known as “angels” because they helped support and fund startups before anyone else. The first person to use this term was Louis Steel in 1946 when he put his own money into a company that would later become Lockheed Martin.
However, it wasn’t until 1956 that the word “venture capitalist” was used for the first time by economist William Baumol. He wrote about how these investors were risking their capital on new growth opportunities through smaller companies with more risk than what you might find from investing in an established business like IBM or General Electric.
By 1960 there were around 60 active VC firms, according to James Moore’s book Challenges For A Changing World (1960).
The Venture Capitalist’s Impact on Society:
Although there are plenty of examples, we’re going to focus on just four. First up is George Roberts and the VC firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB). They funded companies like Google, Amazon, Genentech, and many others that have shaped our society as it stands today.
Next is Vinod Khosla with his company Presidio Ventures, which had invested in many startups, including Facebook, before they went public. Thirdly is John Doerr, whose KPCB venture capital fund was one of the first major investors into social networking giant LinkedIn.
And last but not least, there’s Michael Moritz from Sequoia Capital, who has invested in companies like Google, Yahoo!, Cisco and PayPal.
These entrepreneurs have transformed the United States into a country that has one of the most lucrative economies on earth. Without them, we might never have seen companies like Google or Facebook become giants in their respective industries.
